WordPress Maintenance - Frequently Asked Questions

WordPress core, themes and plugins are updated frequently to fix bugs and security vulnerabilities. Left unpatched, an outdated WordPress site becomes an easier target for hackers and can break as browsers and PHP versions move on.

They can, which is why updates should be tested on a staging copy before going live on the real site. If something does break, having a recent backup means it can be rolled back quickly.

Security updates should be applied as soon as they're available. Plugin and theme updates are usually best done monthly, tested first, so nothing is left exposed for long.

A recent backup and a malware scan are the first line of defence -- the site can usually be restored to a clean version and the vulnerability that let the attack through patched.
